CHAPTER EIGHT

“WHY DOES CHANGE have to come so early?” Kelly propped her head up on one fist as she leaned on the bakery’s kitchen island. “Couldn’t you delay opening hours at least so we can sleep in a little more?”

No response beyond the whir of a mixer. Megs checked her dough, then shook her head. “I have a plan. But I don’t mind the hours.”

Kelly did. Big time. She groaned and went to pour a third cup of coffee from the station out front. She’d tossed and turned last night rather than sleeping, and her body felt it. She doctored her java with cream and sugar and carried it back to the kitchen with her, stirring as she walked. “What’s your plan?”

“We’re going to close the bakery early.”

The coffee cup almost dropped from Kelly’s hands. “Maybe I got less sleep than I thought because I think you just said we’re going home early.”

Megs held her hand up in warning. “We’ll try it out first. Leave earlier so that we’re not putting in as many hours and wearing ourselves out.”

“Oh.” The sense of relief she felt shouldn’t have been so strong. After all, the bakery was Megs’s life. Not hers. “What else do you plan to do?”

“Simplify. I can’t keep up with all the varieties of baking that Grammy did.” She walked to the ovens and checked the temperatures. “But what I do, I do well. And that’s what customers respond to.”

Kelly approved. Megs consulted the recipes and looked up once more. “And the Sweetheart is no longer doing wedding cakes.”

Now she was just talking crazy. “But you have to. Every wedding in Lake Mildred has had its cake from the Sweetheart for over fifty years.”

“Then it’s time to give someone else a chance.” Megs took the coffee mug from Kelly before she spilled it. “Grammy had the skills and the passion for cake decorating. I don’t.” Megs shrugged. “You said that I need to be who I am.” Megs held out her hands and motioned to her body. “This is it.”

Sure, she had to throw her words back at her. Kelly was still stunned. “But you have to.”

“No, I don’t.” She took a seat next to Kelly. “Isn’t that what you were telling me last night?”

“Yes, but what about tradition?”

“I’ll still make those we have under contract, but I’m not taking on any more.” She giggled. “You have no idea how freeing this is making me feel.”

Kelly closed her eyes. When she’d told her sister to be who she was, she hadn’t meant to throw decades of tradition out the window.

Had she?

Still, the drawn look on Megs’s face had disappeared. She seemed content. As if she really knew who she was and what she wanted. Kelly longed to run to the bathroom to see if that same expression was on her face, but she doubted it. She had decided to fix up the house and sell it. But what would happen after that?

Kelly’s cell phone buzzed, and she took it out of her jeans pocket.
